What is depression? Depression is a condition in which one is constantly in a state of sadness. Numerous theories have come up trying to explain depression. Even though most of these theories make sense depression is not a condition that can be easily explained. Depression can be divided into different types, which is the reason why one cant explain it easily. There is a reason for each type of depression and by getting to know each of them will enable you to understand depression as a whole.
Depression facts: what causes depression? One theory states that an imbalance among the neurotransmitters found in the brain is responsible for depression. The theory, however, does not give a clear explanation to how these neurotransmitters affect depression. This theory seems to give a possible explanation for depression.
Another theory states that depression is linked to the level of serotonin present in the brain. Scientists say that serotonin is the neurotransmitter that has a positive effect on a persons mood. Researchers say that serotonin helps the brain cells regenerate and this keeps the brain happy. When the serotonin levels in the brain become low the amount of brain cell regeneration decreases and this results in depression. General cases are best explained by this theory. Drug companies develop antidepressants based on this theory.
Women can also suffer from depression due to hormonal imbalance. Fluctuations in hormone levels during menstrual cycle can cause depression. It can happen when the women is pregnant, not pregnant, or has given birth to a child recently.

One of the signs of depression is over sleeping. People tend to oversleep not because they feel tired, but because they feel there is nothing worth getting up for.
Another sign of depression is Insomnia. People who are depressed cant seem to fall asleep. Even taking sleeping tablets does not seem to do them any good.
Irritability can be sign of depression. This can be due to either too much sleeping or the lack of sleep.
Fatigue can also be a sign of depression. This can be due to either insomnia or over sleeping.
Pessimism is another sign of depression. Such people tend to thinks negative and believe that the worst is going to happen.
Depression can reduce a persons willingness to socialize with others. Many people when they are depressed tend to isolate themselves from others.

Taking medication may remove the symptoms, but one should take steps to address the cause of depression such as taking up a more active lifestyle or therapy.
Getting proper amount of sleep is also important to have a sound mind.
Other possible cures for depression is following a healthy diet as well as reducing ones stress.
