Many of you use a furnace to heat your house. Electricity, wood, coal, propane, oil and natural gas are used to run the furnace. Most of the popular models today, however, run on gas. The reasons for this are that gas is not expensive, commonly available, and burns cleanly.
How does a gas furnace keep your house warm? The thermostat that you keep inside your house starts the whole heating process. The job of the thermostat is to sense the rooms temperature. In case the rooms temperature falls below the desired value, the heating system is turned on by the thermostat. The first thing to be turned on is the inducer fan. The purpose of this fan is to pull air till the desired combustion airflow has been established. Once this is done the gas valve is opened and gas is allowed to pass through. This gas passes through the burner where it is lit either by a spark or the heat given out by an ignitor. In the case of older unit a small flame is allowed to burn continuously. This flame is called standing point and is used to light the gas.
After the flame has been ignited the ignitor or the spark is turned off. In case you are using an older unit the standing point flame is not turned off. The gas should burn for a minimum period of two minutes, before the blower starts spreading the heat inside your house. This is because the air that is going to be circulated in the house should be sufficiently hot. Once the air has become sufficiently hot the blower motor is turned on. This heated air is then sent through duct system which spreads it to the different rooms. The hot air enters the rooms through vents found in the ceilings, walls or the floor.
After the rooms temperature has been raised to a certain extent, the furnace is switched off. This is also done by the thermostat. Like before it is the job of the thermostat to sense the temperature and once the required temperature has been reached, the gas valve leading to the furnace is turned off. This process will stop the gas from reaching the furnace. However the blower will run for a few more minutes. This is done so that the heat exchange has cooled down a bit. The duration for which the blower motor runs is decided either by the temperature switch or the timer.
